John Sikorski - Glass Artist

I’m a glass artist and photographer from Skye. I have always been inspired by the visual beauty and starkness of dramatic landscapes and the dynamic lighting displays that occur around the Atlantic. My photography work has taken me to remote environments including St Kilda, the Arctic and Antarctica, where the forms, structures and textures in rock and ice provide inspiration for designing my glass pieces.

I first worked with glass in 2005, drawn to its ability to transmit light and produce colour, and its capacity to transform the mood of a space. Having explored a range of techniques via various courses, my work now involves hand-painting onto glass, and kiln-firing pieces. I collaborate with wood and metal specialists to design and realise my vision for how each piece should be displayed.

Glass is an engaging material to work with as it requires a combination of design, artistic and technical skills.  It can behave in unpredictable ways, which can lead to further creative discoveries. I have three collections currently in development: the St Kilda Collection, Skye Collection and Antarctic Collection, and my work has been supported by Creative Scotland.
