Materials & Techniques

The St Kilda collection is crafted from coloured glass, which I obtain in sheet form, wood and metal. In some cases, glass can be salvaged from old windows and used in my pieces. I use various design techniques, drawing inspiration from my photographs and memories, and work with lead-free paints using different brushes to build up textures and dimension. On completion, the panels are mounted above a base of oiled Scottish hardwood. Antique finishes in the metalwork serve to bring together the different materials forming the piece.

The artist - John Sikorski

I’m a glass artist and photographer from Skye. I have always been inspired by the visual beauty and starkness of dramatic landscapes and the dynamic lighting displays that occur around the Atlantic. My photography work has taken me to remote environments including St Kilda, the Arctic and Antarctica, where the forms, structures and textures in rock and ice provide inspiration for designing my glass pieces.
